Ballyshannon Fire: “A sinister and frightening act” - Cllr John Campbell

Independent Cllr. John Campbell this morning called the burning of the Parkhill property, “a sinister and frightening act that I condemn outright”.

“I feel that the recent comments by some local councillors on the issue of housing travellers have not been helpful, and I hope that their commentary did not contribute to the perpetrators’ justification of this crime in their own heads,” Cllr. Campbell said.

“The commentary of Cllrs. O’ Neill, Mc Eniff and Dolan is at odds with the policies of Donegal County Council in relation to the housing of travellers,” Cllr. Campbell said. “They are at odds with equality legislation and indeed with policy positions of their various political parties. I believe that they are being disingenuous as they have had an input in the formulation and have supported the various diversity and inclusion policies.

“I have every faith that the decision of Donegal County Council to house a traveller family in this location stands up to scrutiny against the policies adopted by councillors,” Cllr. Campbell said, adding that he hoped the Garda investigation would bring the perpetrators of the crime before the courts.
