ASDA stores in Strabane and Enniskillen rake in £5m over Christmas period

Crossborder branches of ASDA in Strabane and Enniskillen brought in circa m between them in the final pre-christmas shopping rush - much of that money coming from Donegal shoppers.

ASDA stores in Strabane and Enniskillen brought in sales of over 3 million and 2 million respectively during the festive period. In the lead up to Christmas the Enniskillen store was identified as the second highest performing store in the supermarket’s UK-wide group and the sixth top store in Wal-Mart’s global empire.

December 23 was the group’s biggest ever trading day with sales "significantly" ahead of 2007's busiest day.

During the peak seven days trade before Christmas, of the fourteen stores in the province nine achieved sales of over 1 million, the top two performers were border stores Enniskillen and Strabane.

Commenting on ASDA’s overall performance, president and chief executive officer Andy Bond said:

“2008 has been one of our best years and we have rounded it off in style with Christmas sales ahead of our expectations. Food sales, as expected, held up well as customers didn't stint on food and drink to share with family and friends."

Sales remained strong

Mark Pollard, regional operations manager of ASDA NI, said: “After a really positive Christmas trading period sales have remained strong into the New Year with cross border trade still contributing greatly in key stores such as Enniskillen, Strabane and Omagh.”

Eugene Teague, general store manager of the Asda Strabane, said: “Sales have remained strong into the New Year with cross border trade largely contributing to this.

“We have always been popular with shoppers from the Republic of Ireland but as the euro gets stronger we have been inundated with cross border shoppers.

As we continue to price as competitively as possible, we hope to see this carry on throughout 2009,” he said.
