Arranmore marks 75th anniversary of boating tragedy

Members of the Donegal Association of Dublin will travel to Arranmore Island this Saturday to mark the 75th anniversary of the Arranmore Disaster, the boating tragedy that took the lives of 19 islanders and led to the association's formation.

The day of commemoration takes place this Saturday, Sept. 4. Members of the Donegal Association and others will travel to the island on the 12 noon ferry from Burtonport.

In 1935, Donegal people living in Dublin came together to raise money for the families of the victims of the Arranmore Disaster, and that fund-raising and social group grew into the association. Today the Donegal Association of Dublin bestows the annual Donegal Person of the Year Award, as well as supporting other events that promote the county and its people.

Arranmore marks the tragic anniversary each year, and the island is still feeling the impact, islander Nora Flanagan said. Eighteen of the 19 victims came from the same part of Arranmore, and seven were from the same family.

"The population may have been more than it is now, but losing one person from a small place like Arranmore, where everyone knows everyone else, is a huge tragedy," she said.
