Anti-drug campaigner seeks drug driving stats

Despite new reports due to outline the growing use of illegal drugs among drivers, a Letterkenny anti-drug activist says he’s been unable to get statistics on the problem for almost five years.

A new report, to be published last evening by Transport Minister Leo Varadkar and Professor Denis Cusack of the Medical Bureau of Road Safety into the incidence of drug driving is expected to pave the way the introduction of a medical device similar to breathalysers to test drivers for drug use next year.

Letterkenny activist, PJ Blake, said he has been campaigning on the issue of drug driving for many years and despite the launch of a high profile, anti drug driving campaign in 2007, he is still unable to get statistics on the issue from gardai.

“I initially got in contact with the Garda Press Office about the figures and I was told later they did not have them. That was five years ago. A massive poster campaign was launched August 12, 2007 on the issue, but I still can’t get figures.”
