Alma goes 'live' on the Mooney show!

Her work at local level has been recognised by all who have benefited from it but now, thanks to yesterday's 'live' broadcasting of the 'Mooney' show on R.T.E. radio, Alma O'Donnell is a household name around the country, writes Paddy Walsh

The popular personality, who has been responsible for such initiatives as providing a bus service to Galway for cancer patients, was honoured on the show which was broadcast from An Grianan Theatre in Letterkenny.

Believing she was just there as a member of the audience who packed into the auditorium, Alma was surprised when presenter Derek Mooney announced her as the recipient of the ‘Magic Moment’ section of the programme. “Thank you so much, I do not believe I deserve this,” she exclaimed.

But deserve it she did after her work on behalf of those suffering from cancer. Her prize? A two nights stay in the luxury Adare Manor hotel.

Not the only winner on the show, Rosses Community School Deputy Principal, Mary Forrestal, winning a two nights stay in the Junior Suite of the new Gibson Hotel in Dublin’s Point Village when securing a sudden death ‘play-off’ in the daily Mooney quiz after finishing level on points with retired H.S.E. executive, Peter Toner. Both he and a third contestant, Lisa Frize, received runners-up prizes of a 50 euro voucher for the Yellow Pepper restaurant in Letterkenny.

The show also featured local entertainers, Conal Gallen and Mickey Harte, and Eurovision winner, Paul Harrington. An Grianan Director, Patricia McBride, also spoke on the show and there was a ‘one for everybody in the audience’ moment when she announced that the attendance would receive a free ticket for Little John Nee’s ‘The Derry Boat’ which will be staged over three nights in the theatre in October.
