All Ireland Final: It’s Donegal v Mayo on September 23rd
Mayo 0-19
Dublin 0-16
Donegal will play Mayo in the All Ireland senior football final on September 23rd.
A fancied Dublin just couldn’t match the Connacht men’s hunger and drive, but to be fair the Dubs contributed to an amazingly tense finish.
In a remarkable semi-final Mayo outplayed the defending All Ireland champions Dublin in the first half and for much of the third quarter but Dublin fashioned a remarkable comeback, narrowing a ten point Mayo lead to two points.
Leading by 6 points at half time, Mayo blasted into a huge second half lead, but the Dubs battled back gamely to bring the game to within three points when Bernard Brogan went through to score what seemed a certain goal.
But Mayo somehow managed to keep the Dublin ace - who was having a very poor day - out for a goal.
Paul Flynn pointed to narrow the gap to two points with four minutes of normal time to play.
There were a plethora of chances at either end, Cillian O Connor the Mayo 14 should have goaled but shot wide as the excitement level grew.
Referee Joe McQuillan deemed there would be five minutes of added time and with normal time up, Mayo who at one stage had a ten point second half lead, were ahead by two, 0-17 to 0-15.
Mayo went 21 second half minutes without a score when O’Connor stepped up for a 40 metre free to push Mayo 0-18 to 0-15 ahead.
Mayoheld their nerve and Mayo held out to win by three points.
