‘Alcohol abuse our biggest crisis’ - Deputy Pringle

A Donegal deputy has called for more investment in addiction services and on the alcohol problem during a debate in Dail Eireann.

Deputy Thomas Pringle said that alcohol problems have been identified as the “number one issue in Ireland” and called for more investment in addiction services in a technical group motion.

The South Donegal TD said, “When I was a child, sweets were on display beside the checkout in shops, now people are being encouraged to buy their drink at the point where they’re buying their groceries.

“It is simply everywhere and with the low cost selling of alcohol in many outlets we are looking at a problem that will have long term implications.

“Alcohol problems are creating substantia costs for the health service and spending a littel now would save a lot of money in the future. It would also help prevent a lot of the misery that has been caused to many families around this country. It is a problem that we must address now.

The newly appointed Miniser Alex White who this week replaced Roisin Shorthall TD in rather controversial circumstances promised to bring a plan to government in the near future.
