‘ACT NOW TO SAVE LIVES’ - McDaid

Dr James McDaid, a former TD and government minister, says Article 40.3.3 should be removed from the Irish Constitution in order to protect the lives of pregnant women.
Dr McDaid says he was prompted to speak exclusively to the Donegal Democrat/People’s Press in light of the controversy surrounding the death of Savita Halappanavar. The 31-year-old Indian woman died in a Galway hospital in October from septicaemia following a miscarriage. Her family claim that she repeatedly asked for and was denied a termination. Her husband Praveen Halappanavar is calling for a public inquiry into her death.
Dr McDaid believes that an independent but private inquiry should be conducted into her death, with the results made public.
Dr McDaid told the Donegal Democrat/Peoples Press: “As the current debate on the tragic death of Savita Halapannavar dominates our news on a daily basis, as indeed such a tragedy should, I am reminded of an article I wrote for The Irish Times in September 1992. This was at the height of the debate on the abortion issue. I believe the solution I gave then is as true today as it was then.
“The first essential is to remove Article 40.3.3 from our Constitution. I trust we have moved on. We must accept that there were other ‘Savitas’ who lived because their problems were solved by our close proximity to the UK.”
