Abbot jobs announcement good news for Donegal?

Donegal job seekers are sure to benefit from a massive jobs announcement by the pharmaceutical giant Abbot.

On Thursday afternoon Abbot announced it is to invest €85million in the expansion of its Sligo pharmaceutical facility with the creation of up to 175 jobs. The expansion is being made with the support of the Irish Government through IDA Ireland.

Welcoming the announcement, Minister for Small Business, John Perry TD, pointed out that as many as 150 construction jobs will also be created in the short term in addition to the 175 actual long term jobs at the plant.

“Abbott is a world-leading company and a hugely important employer in Sligo, and the announcement that it is expanding its facility there by investing €85million with the creation of 175 high-quality jobs is a fantastic announcement for the county.

“Up to 150 jobs will also be created in the construction phase up to 2014. It is a huge boost for the region which like many others has suffered from the mistakes of recent years through a high unemployment rate.

“These jobs have been created with the support of the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation through IDA Ireland. I commend all involved, in particular the staff and management of Abbott in Sligo who, as the company has said, have played such an important role in making this announcement a possibility.”

Abbot also has a major plant in Donegal town but no jobs boost for this plant is anticipated.
