A frequent stop to fill up his car with petrol and enjoy a coffee and a chat has proven a very profitable habit for one Donegal County Councillor.

Cllr. Brendan Byrne called into the Spar Texaco filling station just outside Donegal Town yesterday morning to confirm his Euromillions Lotto numbers after discovering that he had won just under €50,000 in last weekend’s draw.

Staff this week confirmed that Cllr. Byrne had been in to thank them all and confirm the winning numbers.

Employee, Collette Byrne, said, “You have just missed him - I am sure he has probably gone off to Dublin to collect his winnings. As far as I can remember it was a quick pick which resulted in a nice St. Patrick’s Day present of just over €49,000.

“We are all delighted for him - Brendan often drops in for his fuel when he’s heading off on council business and enjoys the chat with the owner Christy (Dunleavy) and a lot of the regulars.

Cllr. Byrne was unavailable for comment at the time of going to press yesterday evening.
