A Donegal drama returns to TG4
Author Patrick McGinley and his sister Bernadette, at a 2011 launch in Donegal of his book, "That Unearthly Valley, a Donegal Childhood".
Donegal viewers will have a chance to revisit a 1991 drama with deep Donegal roots this weekend, when TG4 broadcasts the BBC production, “Murder in Eden”, based on a novel by Patrick McGinley.
The strong Irish cast includes Tony Doyle, Peter Firth, Tina Kellegher, Ian Bannen and Frankie McCafferty, and the drama was filmed in Glencolmcille.
The three-part drama will be broadcast on consecutive Saturdays, beginning Saturday, Feb. 9th.
“It’s always nice for Irish people to be able to see these dramas again,” said Deirbhile Ní Churraighín, feidhmeannach ceannacháin for TG4. She said TG4 tries to source as much Irish drama as possible and said she found the production in the BBC archives.
“It’s such a great little drama series,” she said. “I was so glad to get my hands on it again.”
Deirbhile, who hails from Teelin, said there was great excitement in the area when the drama was filmed in 1991.
“And it’s about Patrick McGinley, too,” she said of the Glen man and acclaimed author. “We’re very proud of him.”
In the drama, an English engineer is posted to Donegal to do geological testing. He starts to frequent the local pub and finds himself in a story of murder, blackmail and other intrigue.
The series is based on Patrick McGinley’s novel, “Bogmail”, and the broadcast coincides with a reissue of the novel, which New Ireland Press will publish at the end of February. Fans of Patrick’s work will also be glad to hear the news that he has a brand new novel, “Cold Spring”, that will be published in March.
“I think ‘Bogmail’ is his masterpiece, and the fact that the drama was made so well by the BBC, it’s just a pleasure to watch,” Deirbhile said.
“Murder in Eden” will be broadcast on TG4 on three consecutive Saturdays, Feb. 9th at 9.55pm, Feb. 16th at 9.50pm and Feb. 23rd at 9.55pm. Viewers will also be able to watch the drama streamed live those nights on the TG4 web site, www.tg4.ie.
