€330m A5 funding welcomed

The €330m funding announced today to upgrade two sections of the A5, between Derry and Strabane and betweeen Omagh and Ballygawley, is “of huge importance to Donegal”, according to Charlie McConalogue, TD for Donegal North East.
NI Finance Minister told MLAs today that around €500m is available for capital project and that €330m of this has been earmarked for upgrading part of the main route from Dublin to Derry.
Deputy McConalogue told the Donegal Democrat: “Today’s announcment regarding the A5 is of huge importance for Donegal. It’s the most significant announcement for our area since I’ve been in politics.
“The fact that this project is back on track now is vital. It’s the single most important piece of infrastructure for the northern half of Donegal.
“We need an arterial route, two lane carriageway access, for companies that transport goods in an out of the county, as well as for our own people and for tourism.
“It’s a matter that all the political representatives from the county have been fighting hard for on a unilateral basis, alongside the members of Derry City Council and Omagh District Council. Everybody has spoken with one voice on this.
“Now we must try to ensure the Irish government t links in with the NI governmentt to get the remainder of that road finished in a timely fashion. “It’s vital to get work started as soon as possible.”
