20 year old jailed for six months after putting knife to woman’s neck

A young man has been sent to jail for six months just ten days before his 21st birthday.

A woman told gardaí the man had put a five-inch knife to her neck and threatened to kill her.

Jason McDonagh, with addresses at Market Yard Ballyshannon, Old Quarry Bundoran and Ross Road, Magheracar, Bundoran appeared before Ballyshannon District Court last Friday.

He had been remanded in custody from Sligo District Court last Tuesday, when he was charged with an assault, because one of the complainants, Angela Ward, couldn’t be there.

In Ballyshannon on Friday, his defence solicitor said she was present and wished to withdraw her complaint.

Taking the stand, Ms Ward said the defendant had been “very drunk” and had started hitting her.

Inspector Denis Joyce told the court that in her statement, she told gardai that he had put a 5 inch knife to her neck and threatned to kill her.

Judge Kevin Kilrane stated: “it’s not for her to decide whether the case proceeds or not, it’s for the State to decide.”
