20% jump in legal aid figures paid here

editorial image

There was an increase in legal aid paid to Donegal’s solicitors last year with the figure jumping by around 20 per cent.

Solicitors in the county earned more than 500,000 euro in legal aid in 2012 compared to more than 400,000 euro in 2011.

The increase here came despite a decrease nationally with legal aid to solicitors falling from 33m euro in 2011 to 29m euro last year.

Total expenditure under the Criminal Legal Aid Scheme for 2012 was 50.5 million euro , a reduction of 10 per cent over 2011. The Department of Justice said the reduction in the annual expenditure is the largest ever recorded and represents a fall of approximately €10m euro, or 16 per cent, over the peak recorded in 2009.
