£360,000 for Donegal Fire Service

The investment of £360,000 to the Donegal fire service has been welcomed by the Tánaiste Mary Coughlan. The funds have been used to provide eleven new four wheel drives for the Donegal fire service and will be stationed throughout the county. The announcement was made by the Minister of State for Housing and Local Services, Michael Finneran. The vehicles will be stationed throughout the county at numerous locations including Glenties, Killybegs and Donegal Town.

The county’s chief fire officer Bobby Mc Menamin said the vehicles will be used to improve road safety at road accidents. They will also be used to tackle gorse fires and adsverse weather conditions, similar to the weather at Christmas. “We need something to provide advance warning on the other side of an accident and to defend off against oncoming traffic”. The Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government is funding eight of the vehicles, with the Council providing for the remaining three. Minister Mary Coughlan said flexibility of response is key and the new four wheel drive vehicles will be a welcome addition to the response capacity of the fire service in Donegal.
