Donegal family attempt to get through next round of Ireland's Fittest Family

The Ryan Family from Kilmacrennan with former rugby international Alan Quinlan.

The Donegal family who are taking part in  RTÉ One’s Ireland's Fittest Family series will be back on the nation’s TV screen on Sunday evening.

The Ryan family from Kilmacrennan have made it into the second round of the popular programme which sees families throw themselves at some of the most challenging obstacle courses and terrains in the country, in the quest to be crowned Ireland’s fittest family and take home the €15,000 cash prize.

Father Danny, Keane (22), Jordan (17), and Alanna (16) have made it through to the second round of the competition which has been reduced from 12 to eight families. In Sunday’s programme the Ryan’s will be up against three other families as they try to progress to the next round.

The programme is described as Ireland's most exciting and extreme fitness competition.

Four Irish sporting legends coach the teams and Sunday’s programme will see the family meet their coach, rugby legend Alan Quinlan, when he came to visit them in Kilmacrennan.

Maria Ryan, who entered her husband and children for the programme without their knowledge told the Democrat: “The competition was very stiff.”

“I saw an advert on Facebook and decided to enter them without telling them. Then I got a phone call asking them to a fitness test in Athlone where 55 families were tested.”

The family can’t reveal how they got on in the show, but Maria says they have enjoyed watching their progress unfold on TV.

“It’s good craic listening to people talking about how the different families get on.”

Ireland's Fittest Family is on Sunday, 6.30pm on RTÉ One.
