Killybegs take their points to overcome Naomh Columba

Killybegs celebrate winning the Southern U-16 final

Killybegs had a little too much power for Naomh Columba in the Southern Regional U-16 final in Ardara.

KILLYBEGS 0-11
NAOMH COLUMBA 0-5

Naomh Columba relied almost totally on Aaron Doherty and Lanty Molloy, but on a difficult evening for football, they were well marshalled.
Killybegs were the better balanced outfit and were winning most of the 50-50 battles.
Naomh Columba were on the board inside 16 seconds through Lanty Molloy, but they only managed one more score for the remainder of the first half.
Killybegs had the advantage of the slight wind which was driving a misty rain diagonally across the field.
Karl Gallagher had Killybegs level and they added points at will to go 0-5 to 0-1 up after 15 minutes.
Odhran McGuinness, Ryan Cunningham (2), and Ross Conneely got the points while Karl Gallagher had a good goal chance but shot weakly when getting through on goals.
Dillon Kelly had Naomh Columba's second point on 16 minutes after good work by Aaron Doherty.
Before half-time Ross Conneely (free) and Odhran McGuinness added further points to leave the Fishermen ahead by 0-7 to 0-2 at half-time.
Naomh Columba had a good period at the start of the second half but only managed one point, Aaron Doherty converting a 20m free.
Michael Statham, who had just returned from injury, hit a beautiful effort into the breeze to restore the five point lead and Karl Gallagher had a good goal chance on 40 minutes, but first timed his effort into the side netting.
Ross Conneely added another to stretch the lead to six on 42 minutes.
With nine minutes left Aaron Doherty had another free but they couldn't build on it and Ross Conneely, one of the best players on the field, had a very good point for Killybegs on 60 minutes.
Naomh Columba did have a goal chance late with Dillon Kelly creating the opening for Lanty Molloy to rattle the crossbar.
Best for Killybegs were Timmy Gorrell, Ryan Carr, Michael Callaghan and especially Conneely and McGuinness, who hit some wonderfull scores.
