A newly married Donegal RNLI lifeboat volunteer’s wedding wasn’t all plain sailing when he got a emergency call out as he delivered his wedding speech.

Buncrana man Francy Burns had just married his bride Helen McFarland, last Saturday and was enjoying the reception with family friends and his fellow volunteers when their RNLI pagers sounded with a call out.

The team jumped into action to aid a stricken vessel that had lost power and Francy faced a dilemma on the biggest day of his life.

However, as he was preparing to follow his lifeboat colleagues and head out the door, the coxswain assured him they had enough crew.

“It was certainly a day of mixed emotions,” Francy told Afloat magazine, adding: “I saw the crew stand up to head out for the lifeboat shout during my speech and my first thoughts were to follow them”.
