A spokesperson for Lár Chomhairleach Baile Gleann Cholmcille has said that Fintra Bridge needs to be given priority before it is too late.
Brendan Byrne, who is the press spokesperson for the group, said that the bridge was taken off the county wide infrastructure project in 2015.
He said: “This bridge needs to be given priority.
“In fact, it needs to go to the top of the list, be given top priority.”
According to the Carrick resident, the bridge is the main route taken by tourists to Slieve League.
“During the summer months, hundreds of tourists traverse the bridge en route to Slieve League.
“The bridge is very important in terms of tourism and in terms of pumping back into the local economy.”
The former Fianna Fáil councillor said that he feels that local representatives in the area need to focus on the issue and table a Dáil question in relation to the matter.
“This issue needs to be raised at Dáil level. Local representatives need to highlight it. The importance of this bridge cannot be underestimated,” he said.
Mr. Byrne said that a deputation must be arranged to go to Dublin to meet Minister Shane Ross.
“We feel that the urgency for a new bridge is not being adequately recognised. The importance of this issue cannot be underestimated,” he said.
“Local representatives must do all they can to push this matter forward.
“It has come to the point now where something has to be done, actions must be taken in order to get this matter dealt with as soon as possible. We cannot leave this issue until it is too late. The sooner we act the better. The sooner we act the less money will be spent,” he said.
