Update: Nine cars destroyed in Letterkenny carpark fire

Gardaí have confirmed that nine cars have been destroyed in a fire in an underground car park in the centre of Letterkenny.

The cars were burnt out at an underground car park at an apartment complex on Rosemount Lane and gardaí say structural damage has been caused to nearby buildings.

Residents were evacuated from 17 apartments near the scene and they were accommodated in Dillon’s Hotel while emergency services dealt with the incident.

Gardaí on patrol discovered the fire in one car, which then spread to another eight cars.

Emergency services were called to scene at 1.45am and had brought the scene under control by 4am.

Three units of the fire service attended along with two ambulances, but no injuries have been reported.

The scene has been preserved for technical examination which is being carried out this morning.

Garda Inspector Goretti Sheridan told the Donegal Democrat that gardaí are keeping an open mind to the cause of the fire until the results of the forensic examination is known.

“We are examining the scene and are canvassing the area for CCTV. We would appeal to witnesses who saw anything suspicious to come forward,” she said.
