St. Eunan’s College in Letterkenny are inviting members of a memorable school team and their families to the official reopening of the school’s refurbished pitch this month.

The school is seeking members of the 1955 team that won the Rannafast Cup, the only A College title that St. Eunan’s captured.

Many of the same players were on the school’s 1956 team, which brought St. Eunan’s to the finals of the coveted MacRory Cup, the Ulster Colleges Senior Football championship.

Father Austin Laverty, who went on to become the ninth president of St. Eunan’s, captained the Rannafast Cup-winning team while a student there.

Mick McGinley, father of golfer Paul McGinley, was also a member of the team and is assisting Chris Darby, principal of St. Eunan’s, in locating members of the 1955 team.

The opening ceremony will be held on Thursday, September 29th.

The ceremony marks the end of an 18-month refurbishment project at a cost of €150,000. The work, the most extensive since the pitch was installed in 1992, involved drainage and complete reseeding and was funded by the Diocese of Raphoe and fundraisers organised by the school’s Parents Association.

Bishop Philip Boyce, bishop of Raphoe, will bless and officially reopen the refurbished pitch during the ceremony.

The project, “highlights the importance of sport at the school,” Mr Darby said.

“Staff, students, the Parents Association and the diocese put a great amount of effort into bringing the pitch up to standard and making it one of the best pitches in the county,” he said.

He said the college would like as many members of the 1955 team as possible, or members of their families, to attend the reopening.

The Parents Association will also unveil a billboard on the day bearing the names of sponsors for the college’s Sports Development Fund, providing for the ongoing development of the pitch.

Mr Darby is asking members of the 1955 team and their families who would like to attend to contact the school on 074 9121143 or to contact him via email at cdarby@sainteunans.com.
