Letterkenny Main Street is expected to remain closed to traffic this morning following a fire at the Central Bar.
The fire originated in an annex to the back of the bar premises, in the beer garden area, and the fire brigade had the blaze under control and extinguished before it spread to the main building.
Donegal Chief Fire Officer Joseph McTaggart told Highland Radio this morning he believed the prompt intervention of the fire brigade prevented the fire from spreading.
Fire brigades are still damping down the scene and ensuring there are no pockets of fire to reignite. The chief fire officer said he expected the main street to remain closed while they are on the scene.
The Letterkenny fire brigade was alerted to the fire at about 7.30am this morning. Two fire tenders from Letterkenny and one from Stranorlar responded to the call, with the first brigade from Letterkenny leaving at about 7.40am.
Fire Officer McTaggart said the cause of the fire was not yet known.
Our photos, taken by Eddie McCarron, show activity at the scene and the premises with smoke visible above the roof of the bar.
