Missing soldier named

More vessels have joined in the massive search for a 28-year-old man who got into difficulties while swimming at Tullan Strand on Tuesday evening.

The soldier, who has been named locally as Corporal Gavin Carey from Kilcullen, Co. Westmeath, was assigned to Custume Barracks in Athlone.

Troops from Athlone travelled to Donegal to join colleagues from Finner who have been assisting in the search operation.

Bundoran RNLI PRO Shane Smyth told the Democrat that there are now 120 troops taking part in the search, along with the RNLI, Coast Guard, Aer Corps helicopter, Gardaí, Garda Water Unit, Naval Dive Team, two Inland Fisheries vessels and Donegal Mountain Rescue Team. The Sligo 118 search and rescue helicopter is expected to join in the search this evening.

"It's a massive, intensive operation that started at first light", Mr Smyth said. "Conditions are not as challenging as they were yesterday but swells are still making it difficult for the divers to search areas in close to the shore."
