New arrest in Denis Donaldson investigation

A man in his forties has been arrested in connection with the murder of former Sinn Féin official Denis Donaldson (pictured).

The former IRA member was killed on the 4th of April, 2006 at his cottage at Cloghercor, Doochary.

Gardaí investigating the murder arrested the suspect yesterday. He is currently being detained at Letterkenny Garda Station under the provisions of Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act 1939 as amended.

Donaldson was a volunteer in the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) and a member of Sinn Féin.

He was murdered following his exposure in December 2005 as an informant of MI5 and the Special Branch of the Police Service of Northern Ireland (formerly the Royal Ulster Constabulary).

It was initially believed that the Provisional IRA were responsible for his killing although the Real IRA claimed responsibility for his murder almost three years later.

Gardaí are appealing to any persons who may have information in relation to this investigation to contact them at the Incident Room at Letterkenny Garda Station at 074 9167100, the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666111 or any Garda Station.
