Naomh Conaill’s bid for a first All-Ireland Ladies Junior Comórtas Peile Na Gaeltachta title ended in disappointment in the wind and rain in Ardara on Monday.
Naomh Conaill 1-8
The Donegal champions who made it through to their first ever All-Ireland final lost to a very strong Moycullen from Galway, who were defending the title they won last year.
The margin of the defeat does not do justice to the Naomh Conaill girls who gave a good account of themselves against the highly rated Galway champions.
They led 1-8 to 1-2 at half-time courtesy of points from Aoife McDonnell, Lorraine Molloy and Alanah McDonnell while Alanah McDonnell also struck for the goal just before half-time.
Shannon McCready scored the Moycullen goal and Roisin Connolly kicked the two points to keep the Galway girls in touch as they faced into the second half with the wind in their backs.
However, playing into the near gale in the second half, Naomh Conaill struggled and failed to register after the restart.
And when Caroline Carter drove home Moycullen’s second goal seven minutes into the new half the game was level and there was only ever going to be one winner from there until the end.
As the conditions worsened in Pearse Park, the game was blown up ten minutes short after the referee consulted with officials from both clubs.
