The U14s collected the club’s first silverware of the season after overcoming Convoy in a thrilling Northern Board Division Two Shield final on Wednesday The seniors and reserves both recorded victories at Red Hughs.
The U-14s got the opening scores of the match with points in the first and second minutes. Convoy replied with three points of their own, and a goal for the visitors sent them into a 0-2 to 1-3 lead after 11 minutes. The home side reduced the deficit with a pointed free, but Convoy got a second goal midway through the half to extend their advantage. A Naomh Colmcille point was cancelled soon afterwards by a pointed free for Convoy, before a goal for the hosts reduced Convoy’s lead to a goal (1-4 to 2-4). However another Convoy goal arrived almost immediately. Naomh Colmcille finished the half with 4 points, with one in reply from Convoy, to leave the half time score Naomh Colmcille 1-8 3-5 Convoy.
Naomh Colmcille got the first point of the second half, but Convoy replied with a point in the 5th minute of the half. Two points from the hosts were cancelled by two points for Convoy to leave the visitors with a 1-11 to 3-8 advantage midway through the half. Naomh Colmcille reduced the deficit to two points in the 19th minute, but despite a number of goal efforts that went narrowly wide, and another that came off the post, the home side still trailed with just a few minutes left. The goal the home crowd craved finally came in the 29th minute of the half to give Naomh Colmcille the lead by the narrowest of margins. However Convoy got a deserved equaliser in stoppage time to take the game to extra time. Full time score Naomh Colmcille 2-12 3-9 Convoy.
The first half of extra time proved crucial for the home team. Naomh Colmcille built up a three-point advantage and got their third goal of the match in the last minute. Convoy replied with a point to leave the scoreline Naomh Colmcille 3-15 3-10 Convoy at the break.
The lead was extended to eight points in the first minute of the second half of extra time with another goal, but Convoy reduced the deficit with a goal soon after. A point for Naomh Colmcille was quickly followed by a goal for the visitors in the 7th minute to leave just 3 points between the sides. A thrilling game concluded with the 10th goal of the match coming to Naomh Colmcille in the last minute of extra time. Full time score (AET) Naomh Colmcille 5-16 5-10 Convoy.

The under 14s played a real rollercoaster of a game in Tír Chonaill park on Wednesday last as they kept their championship dream alive. Aodh Ruadh were on fire in the first half and really gave an exhibition of football, at one point going into a ten point lead. The homesters had that brought back to eight points by half-time, but Ballyshannon still looked in well control. Four Masters came out in the second half with all guns blazing hitting two goals and then pushing into a four point lead. A shell-shocked Aodh Ruadh finally rallied and clawed their way back into game to put a point in it with five minutes to go. The final nerve-shredding five minutes saw the Ernesiders shoot four wides, but then up stepped captain Dylan Gallagher to fire over a magnificent leveler. That point was the icing on the cake of a great performance from Gallagher. Elsewhere Senan Rooney, Shane Gillespie and Michael McKenna were all outstanding, while there were exceptional displays from the two corner backs, Adam Clarke and Adam Rami. Four Masters’ subsequent defeat to Naomh Columba means that they finish the group level on points with Aodh Ruadh and a play-off is now required. That play-off game takes place in Ballintra at 7.15pm this Wednesday, 18th June.
