St. Michael’s notched their first win of the league season with a good win against Four Masters in Tir Chonaill Park yesterday.

Four Masters 0-12

St. Michael’s 1-11

A penalty goal by Colm McFadden after 13 minutes was the decisive score in the end. McFadden was needlessly tripped as he tried to get a loose ball and he made Four Masters pay the penalty.

The county forward was the difference between the sides and even though he notched just two other points, his imprint was on nearly every score in the second half as St. Michael’s responded each time Four Masters scored.

The goal left the visitors ahead by 1-2 to 0-3 at half-time with the second half being a real ding-dong battle with Four Masters getting back within a point on three occasions, thanks to the accuracy of Dillon Ward and substitute Conor McDaid, who hit six frees after being introduced early in the half.

The first half was very poor but we were treated to a very good second period with never more than three points between the sides.

Andrew Kelly had the first point of the second half but Dillon Ward and a Conor McDaid free reduced it to one.

Colm McFadden was really the difference as he supplied the ball for nearly every St. Michael’s score after that.

Lorcan McDaid and Lee Carr made it a three point game but Conor McDaid and Dillon Ward brought it back to one, 1-6 to 0-8, with 49 minutes gone.

Lee Carr responded but that was matched by another McDaid free. Stephen Coyle and Christy Toye stretched the visitors’ lead to three and two from Michael Cannon (a wonderful effort with his left) and a McFadden free pushed Michaels four clear with time almost up.

Four Masters got one back from Dillon Ward and they went looking for the goal but could only get one more from Conor McDaid in added time.

Four Masters were without Luke Keaney (hamstring) while Antoin McFadden was an absentee for St. Michael’s (also hamstring).
