David Tyrell was the toast of St. Eunan’s on Saturday night as his injury time goal earned Eunan’s a late and dramatic draw with Naomh Conaill in Sean MacCumhaill Park.
Naomh Conaill 2-6
St. Eunan’s 1-9
Tyrell pounced four minutes into injury time to slam the ball to the Naomh Conaill net as St. Eunan’s came from eight points down early in the second half.
In the proverbial game of two halves Naomh Conaill more or less dominated the first half and were worth every one of their four points half-time lead.
With Martin Regan and Adrian McGeehan pulling the strings in the middle of the field and with Joe Kennedy, Seamus Corcoran and Conal McNelis carving the openings, the scores flowed for Naomh Conaill.
McNelis and Kennedy hung early points and Corcoran flicked the game’s opening goal as the men from the south-west led 1-2 to 0-1 after 16 minutes.
And while Calum Keaveney (2) and Aidan Friel did raise white flags for St. Eunan’s, further strikes from Kennedy and Kevin McGettigan meant that Naomh Conaill went in 1-5 to 0-4 in front at half-time.
And they were looking good when Jamie McHugh combined with Corcoran to net goal number two five minutes into the new half, to stretch their advantage out to eight points, 2-6 to 0-4.
But amazingly, the blue and whites did not score again as Eunan’s took complete control of the tie.
Keaveney, Eddie Blake, Paddy McGowan and Conor McEniff posted five points for Eunan’s without response in the closing ten minutes to reduce the margin to three points. St. Eunan’s pressed and Tyrell stepped up to save the day.
