Burt are Donegal senior hurling champions once more following Saturday’s final victory over arch rivals Setanta, in O’Donnell Park.

Burt 3-13

Setanta 2-14

Two points may be all that separated the sides at the final whistle but Burt were more comfortable winners that the final margin suggests.

They led by 3-9 to 0-8 at half-time after a storming second quarter which reaped 3-5 to Setanta’s three points to take a firm grip on the game.

Stephen Gillespie fired home the first of the goals on 16 minutes when he pounced on a Jonathan McGrath flick on from a Joe Boyle delivery to put daylight between the sides for the first time.

The goal opened up a 1-4 to 0-4 lead after an even opening quarter during which the sides were level three times.

After Gillespie’s goal, Justin Browne and Campbell did respond to reduce the margin to the minimum.

But that was as close as the men from the Cross got as Burt powered away with white flags from Boyle, McDermott and Niall Campbell before Campbell drove home goal number two on 28 minutes.

It got better for the champions two minutes later when Stephen Boyle smacked home number goal number three with McGrath once again the engineer.

Leading by ten at half-time, McDermott stretched the margin out to 11 before Setanta enjoyed their best spell and hit 1-3 without reply.

The goal- from the penalty spot converted by Campbell - in the early seconds of the final quarter - reduced the margin to five, 3-10 to 1-11.

Niall Campbell split the posts from a free shortly afterwards for Burt’s first score in a quarter-hour. And while the Campbells traded points Burt were still five in front as the clock ticked into injury time.

Setanta were reduced to 14 with the sending off of Bernard O’Brien ten minutes from the end, before Campbell scored Setanta’s second goal from a 20 metre free in the closing seconds to reduce the gap to two.
