The “comeback” ability of Erne Gaels young players was saluted by legendary ex Down and current Fermanagh team manager Peter McGrath at an awards function attended by over 100 in the GAA Centre on Saturday on Saturday night.

For the minor footballers it was their second championship title in four years while the U-12’s and U-14’s took Division Three League titles.

“You were able to comeback from being behind and that to me indicates character. That indicates courage from a group of players who refuse to accept defeat and keep playing to the very end with self belief and determination.”

He added that young players should always be looking forward and all young players should aspire to playing for the county.

“That is what we are trying to do in Fermanagh. We are bringing on young players and developing them. They are not playing for themselves only but for the good of their county.”

Club chairman Declan McCaffrey said it was a very proud night for the club. Erne Gaels had risen like a “Phoenix from the ashes” in the past few years, he told the crowd.

“I am so proud of what this club has been achieving. This year was an amazing year for Erne Gaels at underage level and have more coaches than any other club in the county with 29 qualified Foundation Coaches.

“All our players showed great character and should be so proud of what they achieved this year.

And he reminded the crowd that the club was also having a hurling revival with a big day in the field on March 21.
