Gaeil Fhánada got their Division 2 league campaign off to a good start in Portsalon today with a victory against Cloughaneely in what turned out to be a good day for gaelic football in Portsalon. From throw in Gaeil Fhánada midfielder Michael Sweeney made an individual run up the field and his shot on goal went over the crossbar for a point. Gaeil Fhánada continued the pressure on Cloughaneely and were leading by 5 points to 1 with 15 minutes gone in the game. Then after 20 minutes, against the run of play, Cloughaneely broke up the field and their pressure was rewarded with a goal. Despite this Gaeil Fhánada continued their pressure and with good scores from Oisin Shiels and Seami ‘Nanny’ Friel went in at half time with a 5 point lead, 0-10 to 1-02. Cloughaneely came out strong at the start of the second half scoring two points without reply. Fanad though were able to hold onto their lead from the first half. A late Cloughaneely goal brought the gap back to 2 points but it was too little too late for the Falcarragh men. Final score was 14 points to 2-06. Points from Marty McAteer 1point, Mark ‘Sparky’ Friel 1 point and strong performances from Michael Sweeney 3points, Oisin Shiels 2points and 7 points from Seami ‘Nanny’ Friel made all the difference at the end.
