Letterkenny Gaels travelled to Hibernian Park, Burt for the final of the Northern Regional U-14 final against their neighbours Naomh Colmcille from Newtowncunningham.

Letterkenny Gaels 5-7

Naomh Colmcille 4-8

Gaels played into a very strong breeze in the first half and Naomh Colmcille had scored a goal and two points before Gaels managed to get a score on the board through C Walker.

Gaels missed two goal chances through R Marley and M Sweeney both of whom bore down on goal only to kick wide. However, Sweeney did make up for that miss a few minutes later after fisting a goal to the back of the net following some great team play following a Marley free.

Gaels will be very disappointed with the second two Goals conceded in the first half. Half time score Gaels 1-2 Naomh Colmcille 3-5.

At the commencement of the second half Naomh Colmcille won possession from the throw in and scored a point to lead by 2-4.

The Gaels rallied and some great defensive play by the half backs and B McLough at full back rallied the team who moved the ball up the field ending with a goal from S McGilloway.

From the kick out M Sweeney won the ball and led another attack leading to another goal. Gaels tacked on a few points through R Marley frees and K Kilfeather scored an excellent point from play to bring the Gaels into a four point lead with nien minutes left.

However, Naomh Colmcille were not finished yet and they scored a point from play before a defensive error by the Gaels was exploited for a goal to level the game. Naomh Colmcille then tagged on another point to lead by the minimum with six minutes to go.

Great defending, in particular by C Cullen, Junior and an improvised fisted intervention by B McLough who prevented a goal been scored led to the Gaels counter attacking and scoring three points from R Marley, R Frain and M Sweeney.

Gaels won by the slim margin of two points in what was an absorbing and indeed the proverbial game of two halves.

This was a great entertaining game of football played in a very sporting manner by both teams. Well done to all the boys and hard luck to Naomh Colmcille whom we may meet again later in the season. Thanks to all the parents and supporters who turned up on the night.
