Colaiste na Carraige produced a champagne performance against St Malachy’s in their Markey Cup quarter final clash on Wednesday.

Colaiste na Carraige 6-12

St. Malachy’s, Co Down 2-5

This was as near as complete a performance from the Donegal champions who made light of the wet and windy conditions on the Tyrone Training Centre, 4G pitch.

Noel Ward’s boys were on the front foot from the off and ticked all the boxes with Pauric Cunningham, Cormac Cannon, Paul Ward, Ryan Gillespie and Conor Doherty the standout players in what was a machine-like team performance.

Cunningham, who ran at the Malachy’s defence at every opportunity, scored 3-4 and between himself and Conor Doherty, who was really on fire in the second half, accounted for 5-8 of their team’s total.

Doherty bagged 2-4 before he was substituted late on.

They led 3-6 to 0-3 at half-time despite playing into a strong wind after Cunningham and Aodhan McGinley got them off to a flying start with two goals inside four minutes.

Cunningham banged home the first inside 40 seconds and McGinley converted from the penalty spot on four minutes after Pauric Ward was fouled.

And with Cannon, Ward and Gillespie providing the platfor, the Donegal side had stretched their lead out to 2-4 before Doherty netted his first goal on 22 minutes.

Gerard McKibben kicked two points for the Down champions as Colaiste Na Carraige went in 3-6 to 0-3 in front at half-time.

With the wind at their backs and leading by 12 points, the Carrick boys turned the screw in the second half with further goals from Cunningham (2) and Conor Doherty to cruise into the Ulster semi-final and a meeting with Largy College, Clones.

Shane Smyth and McKibben scored the Malachy’s second half points and substitute Lochlain McClelland pounced for a late goal.
