Donegal got back to winning ways and maintained their bid for promotion with a comfortable victory over Monaghan yesterday.

Paddy Hannigan, Kevin Campbell and Sean McVeigh, scored the goals for Donegal who won this game at a canter.

They were already on their way to the two league points by half-time as they led by nine points, 1-11 to 1-2. Hannigan got them off to a flying start when he hit the game’s opening goal on 90 seconds, shortly after Lee Henderson had opened the scoring.

Monaghan responded with 1-2, a goal and a point from full forward Sean Leonard and a point from Mark Treanor, to tie up the game on 11 minutes. But that was as good as it got for the Farney boys on the wide open spaces of O’Donnell Park.

With Ronan McDermott and Danny Cullen on top at midfield and Lee Herderson, Ciaran Mathewson, Kevin Campbell and Jamsie Donnelly driving forward, Donegal took complete control in the second quarter to deservedly go in nine up at the break. .

Donegal were so far in front and so superior to their opponents, the second half was academic. And when McVeigh and Campbell sunk the dagger with two quick fire goals in the space of three minutes at the start of the half, Monaghan were finally out of their misery.

Ray Durack’s men closed out the game with late points from Enda McDermott, Henderson and Matherson.
