Donegal slumped to their third successive defeat when going down by seven points to neighbours, Tyrone, in Castlefin, yesterday.
Former All-Star Gemma Begley with 4-2 was tormentor in-chief of a Donegal side that lacked the sparkle and the vigour in their play that ran All-Ireland champions Cork to nine points last week.
Tyrone played into the strong wind in the first half and led 3-2 to 1-3 at half-time.
Begley scored the three goals and also chipped in with a point while Emma Hegarty scored the other point.
Geraldine McLaughlin, Lucy Murphy and Karen Guthrie scored the Donegal points and Aisling Cunningham bagged the goal after Tyrone had got off to a flying start and led 2-1 to 0-0 after seven minutes.
Cunningham’s goal on 21 minutes did haul Tyrone’s advantage back to a point.
With the elements in their favour in the second half and Donegal down to 14 players for the opening seven minutes of the second period, Tyrone were very much in the driving seat. Karen Guthrie was sin-binned just before half-time for a high challenge on Niamh Woods.
Both sides scored points on the resumption before Begley struck for goal number four. That was on 37 minutes and when Geraldine McLaughlin blasted wide from the penalty spot seven minutes later the game was up for Donegal. Niamh Carr and McLaughlin posted late Donegal points.
Donegal showed five changes from the Cork game with Emer Gallagher, Kaneisha McKinney, Doreen McGee, Lucy Murphy and Roisin Friel replacing Orla Carr, Kelly Wilson, Rose Boyle, Ciara Hegarty and Rachael McGee.
