Naomh Conaill 3-13

Termon 0-7

As victories go this was about as convincing as one could expect on the opening day of the season. Naomh Conaill bossed the game from the start to the finish with Leo McLoone given a roving commission they took an early grip at midfield.

And with Darragh Gallagher, Brendan McDyer and Eunan Doherty carving the openings up front and Joe Brennan and Marty Boyle charging forward from the half back line they led 1-7 to a point. Doherty smashed home the goal on 15 minutes and by that stage Gallagher (2), McDyer (2) and Joe Brennan had all raised white flags. Brennan, who had a super game at centre half back until he shipped a heavy challenge just before half-time, also drew a good save from Michael Boyle, before Boyle and Gallagher added points to extend the lead out 1-7 to 0-0 with just over 20 minutes on the clock.

Christy Conaghan scored a fine individual point eight minutes from half-time in what was a rare Termon foray into Naomh Conaill territory.

The evergreen Trevor Alcorn hit two quickfire points on the resumption but normal service was soon restored as the Naomh Conaill machine cranked into gear once again.

And by the time John Molloy struck for goal number two on the three quarter mark thanks to further points from McDyer, Boyle, Gallagher and Doherty, the margin was out to 14 points, 2-11 to 0-3.

In cruise control Naomh Conaill, who lined out without Dermot ‘Brick’ Molloy and Leon Thompson, both injured, closed out the game with further points from Gallagher and Boyle and a goal from Gallagher.

Christy Conaghan, Daire McDaid (2) and Brendan Friel responded with late points for Termon who lost Bernard Alcorn to the game’s only black card early in the second half.
