Milford booked their place in the semi-final of the Junior A championship following a one point play-off win over Naomh Ultan.
Naomh Ultan 0-8
There was a grandstand finish and two late points from a determined Naomh Ultan who had a number of chances late on to at least force the tie to extra-time.
In what was a keenly contested and at times feisty encounter played at the Cross, Killygordon, both sides finished the game with fourteen players.
Naomh Ultan’s Aidan Duddy received a straight red card for an off-the-ball clash with a Milford player in the closing minutes of the third quarter. He was joined by Milford’s Cormac Friel in the long walk after he picked up a second yellow for his part in the scuffle that followed Duddy’s incident.
This was a big moment in the game and came after Naomh Ultan had wiped out Milford’s two point half-time lead in the early minutes of the second half.
The experienced Duddy, his team’s leader on the field, had played a key role,in the moves that led to the points from Alan Lyons and Dermot Gallier that tied up the game.
And with their vital link man gone, Naomh Ultan failed to maintain their early second half momentum and did not score again until the first minute of injury time when Lyons split the posts.
In between, Milford, through Christy McCafferty, Cathal McGettigan and David Curley, had knocked over four points to open up a three point advantage.
In a game were defences were very much on top, Milford led 1-3, to 0-4 at half-time. Cathal McGetigan scored the Milford goal in the middle of the half while David Curley (2) and Christopher Barrett kicked the Milford points.
Cian Kennedy, Dermot Gallier, Aidan Duddy and Alan Lyons, scored the Naomh Ultan first half points.
