Big derbies in Donegal Town and Fintra

Big derbies in Donegal Town and Fintra

The All-County Leagues continue today (Monday) with games in all Divisions.

One of the most interesting contests will take place in Tirconaill Park, Donegal Town where neighbours St. Naul’s are visitors against Four Masters, who were relegated at the end of last season.

Four Masters started with a one point defeat away in Glencolmcille while St. Naul’s had a big win at home to Naomh Muire.

The players from both sides are part of the same social scene around Donegal Town which should make for a tasty affair. The sides met in the Senior Championship back in 2003 with the Parish of Inver side getting a surprise draw in the first leg in Tirconaill Park before losing out at home and in the play-off. That was a good year for the Donegal Town club as they went all the way in Donegal, taking home the Dr. Maguire Cup.

There aren’t many of the players involved back then still on the field but Barry Monaghan still carries the flag for Four Masters while the Gallaghers haven’t thrown in the towel yet for St. Naul’s.

An interesting aspect of the St. Naul’s win in their opening game was the return to the Gaelic field of Brian McGroary.

The Drimarone man, who was part of an Irish Schools soccer side with Patrick McBrearty and Karl McHugh, was togging out for his first adult game with the St. Naul’s club after his involvement with soccer cross channel and locally in recent years with Derry and Finn Harps.

There is another good local derby in Eamonn Byrne Memorial Park, Fintra with Naomh Columba the visitors against Killybegs, which should attract a good local attendance.

The visit of Milford to the Banks to play Naomh Muire will have added interest with Milford manager, Danny O’Donnell, returning to his roots.

In the top flight, the big clash is between Glenswilly and Naomh Conaill while St. Michael’s will be hoping to get their season up and running at home to Ardara. Termon have their first outing at home to Gaoth Dobhair
