There are reports of heavy snowfalls throughout many parts of the county resulting in extremely difficult driving conditions at present.

In the Donegal Town area there has been continous heavy snow falls since early morning however it is not lying at present on lower ground.

Conditions in Barnesmore Gap and the environs of Letterkenny are much more hazardous with reports of motorists getting stuck at the bottom of McGroary’s Bray.

A lorry and a bus both got into difficulties at that spot, gardai have confirmed, shortly before 3pm following heavy snowfalls.

There were no reports of injuries.

The lorry is still partially blocking the road, limiting traffic to one line, the garda spokesperson confirmed, and there are “extensive tailbacks” in both directions.

The Letterkenny to Glenties road (R250) is closed at Meenaroy

Freezing conditions are expected later this evening.

AA Roadwatched have advised motorists to check with the authorities before making their journeys and to avoid travelling unless absolutely necessary.
