Taoiseach Enda Kenny was among the many members of the McGinley who enjoyed a very memorable Reunion Gathering at the weekend.
Those taking part are all descendants of John McGinley and Hannah McIntyre of Malinbeg, a connection that goes back three generations.
Most of those attending are living in Ireland but an astonishing 39 family members travelled over from various parts of the United States to join in the fun.
And what a great time it was - a full, packed programme of events running from Thursday to Sunday.
The Gathering began on Thursday night, with a get together at Roarty’s Pub in Glencolmcille.
On Friday, there were tours of the local area, as well as activities including a Treasure Hunt for the children.
On Friday night, everyone gathered at the Community Hall and then went on to the pub for a great night’s craic.
Saturday was taken up with football, Sean-Nós dancing, Irish language lessons and children’s workshops including making St Bridget’s Crosses.
There was a Family Mass at 6.30pm.
This was followed by a big dinner and dance night at The Blue Haven in Kilcar, with music from Eunan McIntyre and The Yetis. The music went down a treat with the result that the dance floor was busy all night.
The clan presented Taoiseach Enda Kenny with a special memento of the weekend, a suitably decorated ‘Gathering Wellie’.
All in all, it was a tremendously good-humoured and lively reunion, one that everyone clearly enjoyed and the memories of which will be treasured in the years to come.
