State to pay Pringle legal case costs

The Supreme Court has ruled that the State will bear most of the costs arising from Thomas Pringle’s constitutional challenge to the ESM treaty.

The court said his challenge raised “serious and substantial issues of exceptional public importance” in which the Donegal TD “had no personal interest”.

The ESM treaty was the mechanism which allowed for the provision of an economic bailout fund for countries within the EU.

Deputy Pringle’s challenge involved seven days in the High Court, three days in the Supreme Court and a hearing at the European Court of Justice.

It’s been estimated that the legal fees could amount to €250,000, with the State paying for practically all the costs.
