A member of the Irish Defence Forces charged with possessing explosives and ammunition has been remanded in custody until next Monday, March 3, when he appeared in Letterkenny District Court to today (Monday).

Mark Cassidy, a private in the Irish Army, was charged with possessing an improvised explosive device and 87, 12 gauge, shotgun cartridges at an Grianan Vale Apartments, Ballyderowen, Burnfoot on February 17.

Derry based solicitor, Eugene Burns, said that he would deal with the matter of bail at the next court appearance on Monday.

Inspector David Kelly said that new matters may arise in relation to the case.

He also asked that gardaí be allocated to query independent sureties.

The accused appeared at a special sitting of the Letterkenny District Court last Thursday evening after being questioned and later charged at Buncrana Garda Station.
