A “red Status” severe weather warning has been issued for the north west this evening.

It is expected the high winds will pick up from around 5pm and increase until later in the evening with gusts of between 120kmph to 150kmph expected.

Home owners have been advised to make precautions for the storm, including securing or removing outdoor items such as garden furniture.

The Met Eireann warning states for today: “Very windy countrywide. Heavy rain sweeping eastwards this afternoon. Stormy conditions expected towards nightfall in coastal counties of Connacht and north Ulster, with very severe and damaging gusts of 120 to 150km/h.

Heavy rain will give way to cold showery conditions early this evening.

Tonight

The southwest storm force winds over northwestern coastal areas will continue for a time early tonight, but will moderate overnight. Winds elsewhere will moderate early in the night.

Clear periods and showers, some turning wintry overnight, some of hail or snow, most especially over higher ground in the west and north but some at lower levels also.

Cold with temperatures around zero with frost and icy patches.”
