A leading Senator in the North West has slammed a draft report on the provision of maternity services which indicate that the service may be removed from Sligo Regional Hospital.
After an interview on Ocean FM where it was revealed that only Galway Regional and Letterkenny General Hospitals might retain the services Senator Marc Mac Sharry told the Donegal Democrat “This is a totally outlandish situation and discriminatory against the people of this region.
“I am well aware that this is only a draft report but regrettably we have seen these in the past and many of them materialised.
“All we have to do is just remember the debacle over the cancer services.
“It is up to a new Government to learn from the mistakes of the past.”
Mac Sharry who is likely to be a candidate for Fianna Fail in the new constituency of Donegal/Sligo added, “A maternity service is perhaps the most basic service of any hospital - to even suggest that a woman from say, Glencolmcille would have to travel to either Galway or Letterkenny is totally outlandish’
“I will be raising this issue in the Dáil tomorrow (Wednesday) seeking full clarification.
.”We cannot have a situation where major recommendations on the future delivery of maternity care for a region as large as the North West are being decided in secret.”
