Celebrations today as everyone at Ocean FM learns the station has been awarded the franchise for the next 10 years.

The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI) has announced that Ocean FM is to retain the South Donegal, North Leitrim and Sligo radio licence franchise for the next ten years.

North West Broadcasting Ltd, trading as Ocean FM, has had the franchise for the last ten years.

Coast FM, which was also bidding for the franchise, is wholly owned by the previous licence owner, Mayo-based Midwest Radio.

The decision of the Contract Awards Committee was announced this afternoon.

A spokesperson for the BAI said: “A contract has been awarded in principle to North West Broadcasting Limited (t/a Ocean FM) for the provision of the radio service for the franchise area of Sligo, North Leitrim and South Donegal. The Authority will now proceed to contract negotiations with the successful applicant and further details regarding the award of the contract will be issued in the coming months.”

Tim Collins, Ocean FM CEO, said: “We are delighted and relieved that the process is now over, and the success of the station in delivering a high quality local service for the region has been recognised, and confirmed with this long-awaited decision.

“We would like to thank our listeners, advertising customers and all our supporters for helping to make the station such a success over the past ten years. We have endeavoured to become the public service broadcaster for the North West in the standards we set ourselves, in the provision of local news, sport, debate, and Irish music to our listeners.”
