This Sunday Barnsmore Gap will become a scenic area for a whole range of different reasons than ever before.

Sleddog racers from all over Ireland will gather in the hills of Donegal to race their sleddogs at the North West Endurance Sleddog Race over 25kms of tough forest trails. Teams of up to six dogs will bring the sleddog mushers over the mountainous terrain, braving the cold winter winds often found in the gap. North West Mushing club is a Donegal-based sleddog racing club, and this is the first event for the newly formed club.

Colm Burns, who is based in Letterkenny, is the main organiser of the race and is a number of fully trained sleddogs whom have competed in and won races in both the North and the south of Ireland. He will be competing in the six dog class with his Alaskan Huskys.

“I am really looking forward to the race this Sunday. It will be a tough trek for us, but the dogs are well used to doing the distance. It will be great to welcome the teams from all over Ireland to the beautiful Donegal landscape, and you can’t get nicer than Barnsmore Gap,” Colm said.

This race is an Irish Federaton of Sleddog Sports sanctioned race, and will see all of the disciplines of sleddog racing being demonstrated on the day. Spectators are welcome to come along and talk to the mushers and to the main organiser Colm Burns. Spectators are welcome to come along and watch the race. However, they’re advised to exercise due caution out on the trails.
