Sligo man Micheal Naughton, best known for his involvement in Donegal GAA ladies football, was selected as part of the Fianna Fail team to seek election on May 23rd for the new Donegal Municipal Area.

At a selection convention held in the Bluestack Centre tonight Naughton joined Brendan Byrne and Sean McEniff after what had potentially been a very divisive week for the party.

Six candidates contested the three nominations; outgoing councillors Brendan Byrne, Sean McEniff along with Bernie Callaghan, Bernie Mulhern, Micheal Naughton and Claudia Kennedy.

Cllrs. McEniff and Byrne along with Naughton emerged victorious in a hotly contested battle.

Speaking after the results were declared an emotional Brendan Byrne, who is recvoering from cancer, told the packed hall at the Bluestack Centre, “This is perhaps the most poignant night I have experienced in my political career. Many times over f the last 18 months I often thought that I would never make it this far but I am here and I am fit and will be doing everything in my power to get this “dolly mixture” coalition out of power in Lfford.

“I never joined Fianna Fail, I was born Fianna Fail.”

All candidates pledged to work together as a united Fianna Fail family to secure three seats.

Defeated candidate, Claudia Kennedy said, “I want to thank the grassroots of Fianna Fail for allowing me to stand before them here tonight.

“I feel both humbled and proud. As a party we stand for the core values of the ordinary man. Tonight I may be defeated but I believe in the future, I am here for the future.”
