The late Rev Dr Stewart Jones

Rev Dr Stewart Jones, a Presbyterian minister who died following a diving accident near St John’s Point last Saturday, will be laid to rest today.

His funeral takes place at 2pm in his own house of worship, Donemana Presbyterian Church.

The popular minister, who was 56, is survived by his wife Patricia and their three grown daughters Anna, Esther and Rachel.

He was a very experienced and highly regarded member of the Professional Association of Diving Instructors and the British Sub Aqua Club who had regularly dived along the Donegal coast for over a decade.

It is thought that a freak wave struck Rev Jones and a fellow diver as they resurfaced about 200 metres off St. John’s Point.

The RNLI and Coast Guard were called to the scene and both men were taken by helicopter to Sligo Regional Hospital.

The second man suffered shock and hypothermia.
