Mass held for woman with strong Fanad connections

Mourners in Fanad gathered last night to remember Kathleen Peat who died in an accident in Australia last month.

A mass was celebrated at St. Mary’s Church, Fanavolty in her memory to coincide with her funeral service in Australia.

Kathleen (48) was the daughter Mary Heraghty from Fanad. The midwife died on St. Stephen’s Day after being knocked off her bicycle while cycling with her husband and a friend near Adelaide.

She had emigrated from Scotland to Sydney in 1993 and settled with her husband Brian in Adelaide 12 years ago. She was the mother of three teenage children aged 14, 16, and 18. The mother of three died while training for a triathlon.

Her husband Brian described his wife as a wonderful woman. “She was devoted to her family and a terrific woman,” he told the Sunday Mail in Australia. “She was struck down by a one-in-a-million [crash]. She touched everybody.”

A 37-year-old woman has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving and leaving the scene of an accident. A 47-year-old man has been charged with fleeing the scene.
