The body of a man has been found off the Downings coast, following a search that began last weekend.

It is understood the man is Michael Green of Rathmullan, whose empty yacht had been anchored in Sheephaven bay. He was in his 50s.

The remains were found at about 5.40pm yesterday, Thursday, near the Rosapenna Hotel in Downings, and have been taken to Letterkenny General Hospital where a post-mortem examination is to be conducted today.

Local councillor, Cllr. Ian McGarvey, said it was a very sad occasion for the community.

He extended his “sincere sympathy to the entire family and extended family on the occasion of this tragedy”.

“It is very sad news for the entire community,” Cllr. McGarvey said.

The search began last Saturday in Sheephaven bay near Ards Friary, after local people had noticed a yacht had been moored there for at least three or four days. Gardaí and the Coast Guard investigated, and found a dinghy tied to the boat had been capsized.
Mulroy Coast Guard and a shore team, the Sligo helicopter and volunteers from Sheephaven Sub Aqua Club were involved in the search operation.
